“Some times when I get a fever I stay home in bed and hope it will pass, so that I don’t have to pay for treatment. I fear that when I can’t work as much, I won’t be able to pay if I get sick.”

– Grace, age 80, farmer of rice and other staple foods near Embu, in Central Kenya. Grace pays for health care out of pocket, as do most Kenyans (less than 50% have any form of health insurance). Her income is seasonal, and is gradually declining as she is less able to work. After our focus group discussion, Grace returned to selling bananas in front of the CFWshop where we met.
