Inner Voice

by

A group of Columbia Business School students just arrived in Hyderabad and are visiting LifeSpring Hospital tomorrow. Having drinks with them last night and hearing about job interviews brought me back a year…going through consulting interviews, applying for the Acumen Fellowship. I nearly made myself (and probably everyone around me!) crazy assessing next steps: whether to do international development work immediately, or go back to the private sector first to gain more skills. For business school students interested in social enterprise, this seems to be a constant question. And of course, in the end, there’s no one right answer. For me, the key was getting rid of the “should’s” and following through on what I really wanted to do.

It’s like this quotation by Steve Jobs:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

So true! You have to be so courageous to do what you want v.s. what the world thinks you should want.

At the end of the day, life is short and following what you believe in is hard, that is why most people dont do it. But just imagine what the world would look like if we all followed our dreams. Perhaps we could change the world:)

Yes, following what you believe in is hard, that is why most people dont do it. But imagine what the world would look like if we all did follow our dreams. Perhaps we could actually change the world:)

Yes following your heart is truly hard and often a constant battle, I think that is why most people dont do it. But imagine what the world would look like if people did follow their dreams. Perhaps we could acutually change the world:)

    Well said Tricia!

I’m willing to bet David Del ser Bartolome was one of those Columbia students, and I know where he stands!

Among my second year class at Cornell the questions and struggles are the same.

I commend you for following your heart. Along with several others, I will do the same this year. Next year even more will follow.

The statement should not be “perhaps we could actually change the world” Make no mistake… We will change the world!

This is really good. I have just been offered a similar fellowship, and I thought I would be jumping up for joy because doing development work is my biggest passion. But now, I am so terrified..the thought of being in a strange country, leaving my house (in this bad housing market) and comfortable job (which i dont really like but pays well) is quite scary. But this fellowship might just be the leap I need to get to my dreams. It is so tough, but you are right.
